Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche Monastery is located in the village of Tengboche, at an elevation of 3867 meters. The monastery also goes by the name of Dawa Choling Gompa and it is the biggest monastery in the entire region of Everest. As per the scriptures the gompa is said to be built in 1916.

The monastery has a long and bitter history. It got destroyed twice after its first construction; first in 1934 by the earthquake and second by devastating fire of 1989 caused by short circuit of wire. The monastery completed restoration project in the year of 2008. Despite all the efforts, the monastery was restored to its original but lost many old scriptures, thangkas, murals and wood carving.

Even in the recent days the Gompa homes several hundred monks. It is seen that monks of age young to old live in the monastery and carry their everyday chores. People from within Everest, Nepal and from outside Nepal who are seeking peace and are willing to walk on the path of buddhism come to Tengboche to find their answers. The monastery and the village offers beautiful views of surrounding peaks and among them included Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam.
