Before making plans to take this trip you need to ask yourselves 3 questions – 1. Are you willing to spend over two weeks in the mountains? 2. Do you have what it takes to be on the 3 Highest Passes in the world? and finally 3. Are you up for the biggest adventure in the life?

If you have answered all the 3 questions above in a yes, you surely are ready to take Everest high passes trek. The trek initiates from Lukla, alike the Everest base camp trek but separates after Namche bazaar. Unlike the base camp, this route is less travelled and only by the real enthusiast. The teahouses along the trail as well is very basic and gives you a close experience to that of camping.

This trip requires a lot of acclimatization rest and is very strenuous at times. The three passes Renjo La (5400m), cho La (5420m) and Kongma La (5540 m) are at the most rarest part of the Everest region and close to Tibet. The beauty of Everest high passes trek is that it as well takes you to famed peak of Gokyo Ri, Kala patthar and also the Everest base camp. The peaks that you would climb to does not require a peak permit from the mountaineering association of Nepal.

ALTERNATIVE ITINERARY DUE TO FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS:

The flights to Lukla and back are heavily dependent on weather conditions. As a result, flight being cancelled for one day, couple of days or for several days is a known phenomenon for flight companies in Nepal. In case we face such circumstances with your holiday plans in the Everest, we will be following a contingency plan and the plan would be as follows:

Day 2

In case your flight was cancelled on the previous day, we will attempt to board our flight on the second. This will be our second attempt to make that flight. In case we make it to Lukla on this day. We will follow our original itinerary from Lukla for the next 14 days.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Day 3

This will be the third and last attempt made to board your flight to Lukla. In case if you are not able to board the flight on this day as well, we would do our best to find an alternative. The best practiced alternative will be a helicopter to Lukla. The helicopter in a sharing basis will cost USD 500 per passenger. In case you take the Heli, you will be dropped in Lukla in around 45 minutes. In case we make it to Lukla on this day, we will still follow the original itinerary to Everest Base Camp and head back to catch our flight on the last day from Lukla.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Day 4

In case we had no luck on Day 3, we will no more wait for the flights or the weather to clear up and head towards Phaplu by road. Depending upon the package you select and the number of people in the Group, we will either take a private vehicle or a public jeep. The drive takes around 9 hours. This route to Everest Base camp was used by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first to scale Mt. Everest. It takes 4 days from here to join the main trail to the base camp. The trek joins the main trail in Monjo.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

It is advised to have some extra days towards the end of the trip for the same reason. Flights might get called off for the same reason and you may have to wait for couple of days or more.

Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing & Trek Preparation

After landing on a 465 meter runway, we immediately retrieve our belongings and head towards the north to the village of Phakding.  We make our way through the school build by Sir. Edmund Hillary in Kyangma, and further through the community forest, chortens, prayer walls, mani and finally through rustic suspension bridge, until we reach Phakding.

We start on the trail along raging Dudh Koshi river and make our first sheer uphill walk to Toktok, where awaits the beautiful view of Thamserku. The final ascent to Namche as well is challenging, whereas you may feel the first symptoms of altitude kicking in.

Acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar

It is uttermost important for us to spend a day in Namche in order to acclimatize for higher ground. The day may be a rest day but it is important to be active even on a free day and being lethargic day around is the worst thing to do. We will do small side trips of 2-3 hours from and to Namche itself. Namche as well is the last stop in the Everest, if you wish to buy any forgotten things for your trek this may as well be a last chance. We spend this day as well on Namche.

The trail immediately enters dense yet beautiful forest of Rhododendron and Pine, by this time Yaks grazing with big bells by their neck is a common sighting but watch out for musk deer on this day. It may look like a small distance to cover in a day but it is very important to be careful about any ascent you make further ascent; it may result to a dire consequence. Lungden is a small village surrounded by boulders, just below the Renjo – La pass and serves like the rest area or base camp for the pass, before ascending further on the next day .

Trek to Renjo- La (17,929ft / 5465m) to Gokyo Lake (4800m)

We need to start earlier than the other days to complete our day’s trek on time. The ascent to Renjo – la is very demanding and on the contrary is very rewarding as well. The clear blue skies and eye popping views of gigantic peaks Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, Taboche and many others awaits on the top. The initial trail past Renjo – La to Gokyo is almost vertical and strenuous and towards further down, the trail becomes gradual. The end of the day is tiring yet it is very pleasing to rest besides turquoise blue, crystal clear reservoirs of Gokyo lakes, with the views of one of the ultra 8000er Cho Oyu.

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Relax Day at Gokyo Lake

After Days of strenuous hike it is uttermost important for us to call it a day and embrace the striking, turquoise lakes. Although it is a rest day and we will not do rapid hikes or treks on the day but will surely stroll around and see all the lakes in the periphery. We have our breakfast, lunch and dinner in Gokyo itself and enjoy the awe – inspiring views of the saw toothed mountains.

The trek starts early and after breakfast. The trail gradually but as we are ascending to one of the most rewarding viewpoints, the trail gets demanding. The view we get of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and many other mountains, including the Dudh pokhari is unrivalled. After Gokyo RI we descend and immediately ascent on a gradual trail of ever changing Ngozumpa Glacier, until we reach Thaknak. After a long hike we rest here to get ready for yet another interesting on one of the highest passes on earth.

Trek to Cho-la Pass (5367m/17604ft) to Dzongla (4,850m/15908ft), 5-6 hrs walk

The days hike is one of the most demanding days in the itinerary of Everest 3 pass trek. The day starts with sheer ascend on the slopes and lose boulders but the view of Ama Dablam right in front and the Ngozumpa on the back and Pharilapche and Kyajo RI is very astonishing. The trail to Dzongla from Cho La pass is equally challenging, you will walk down looking at the broken face of Cho La glacier. After almost two hours of downhill, you will enjoy easy stroll in between beautiful peaks which seems like in the grasp of our palms, with the striking view of Ama Dablam, far down the valley. We call it a day at Dzongla.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Trek to Gorakshep (5,160m/16,929ft), 5-6 hrs walk

The trail heads down on a grassy hill side, with the view of lake Chola Tso and the rugged Cholatse and Arakam. Further down we cross small streams and flat trails and one final effortless ascend to Lobuche.  We walk through the narrow moraine and up towards Gorakshep. As we had a long day of walk and it is very important for us to take appropriate rest and past Lobuche, one needs to acclimatize, we rest in Gorakshep and observe the ambiance.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Trek to Everest Base Camp (5,357m/17,575ft) and return to Lobuche for overnight. 6 to 7 hrs

The walk to Everest base camp is tedious process because of the ever changing path of notorious Khumbu Icefall. Base camp is a beautiful hub for climbers who have been waiting for green signal to head further north. Base camp is a colorful village made out of tents, on the laps of some beautiful mountains with best cloud formations. The walk is not very demanding but is challenging due to the elevation factor. We take the same route back until Lobuche and rest in the same.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Lobuche - Kongma La (5,535m/18,159ft) - Chhukung (4,730m/15,518ft): 6-7 hrs

We start early and by the first sunlight in the morning to make it to the other side by the end of the day. It is important to refill water in hefty amount. The climb immediately gets sheer and strenuous from the very first moment and on the edge of a moraine until we reach to the top. On the top you will enter a flat surface with icy patches of lake and frozen ridges of Kongma La pass. From Kongma La to Chukkung is equally grinding downhill but the view of Island peak and ridge of Amphu Lapcha will sweep you off your feet. It is a must take break at Chukkung for two reason; one because of long day trek and 2nd for the reason that Chukkung is a beautiful village surrounded from ridges and glaciers from all sides.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Trek to Tyangboche (3,867m/12684ft), 4-5 hrs walk

From here we begin to descend and the trails are a little less demanding that a day before but the chilling winds on the ridges are bone piercing. With the beautiful views of Taboche, Cholatse, Amphu Lapcha and un recognizable north view of Ama Dablam, we stroll forward to our final destination, sometimes on the barren trails and for a while on the stone steps. We catch more breath than on the trails of higher ground and the view of the mountains behind is more beautiful than ever. We call it a night at the periphery of the famous and biggest Tengboche monastery, which has been restored to its original despite several tragedies.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Trek to Monjo ((2680M/8791ft), 5-6 hrs walk

The walk from Tengboche to Monjo is all in the woods of Rhododendron, pine and fir that blankets the hills. The forest encompassing the trail is dense and known to be the home of Himalayan thar, snow leopard and musk deer, it is very important to look for the opportunity to spot these wild animals despite the exhaustion. We make our way further to Namche, where you may want to take a look to cascade of houses and snap shots of it with the mountains in the backdrop. We further head down to couple of rustic bridges and through the warm breezes until we arrive Monjo and halt for the day.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Once our convoy reaches to Lukla, the trekking leader will reconfirm your flight for the next day.

Amazing Trek

I cannot thank you enough for your kind generosity. We had a great time on our trek. I do not think you could improve the trek in any way.The staff did everything in their power to make our trip enjoyable and safe. It was truly a trip of a lifetime and Budget Trekking did an outstanding job. I will defiantly recommend this trip and this company to everyone I know going to Nepal. We had a wonderful time.

Everest 3 High Passes Trek, a must do trek with Budget Trekking

The three passes, EBC and Kalapatthar trek was such a memorable experience for our group. The staffs were all very professional including Mr. Sameer who made the trip details very clear and understandable. The bus ride to Jiri as the public bus was a bit cramped and felt quite dangerous so I would recommend a jeep for transport. Our guide Dawa was beyond what we expected as we traveled with him along the trail he became like a brother to us. He was always making sure we were comfortable and taken care of in every way. For instance, on the way up to Chola Pass, it was far below freezing and the gloves brought were not warm enough. My hands were freezing and I could not warm them up. So, Dawa took his gloves off, helped warm up my fingers and gave me his warm gloves to use. It's things like that, that makes you really trust in a guide that he wants to make sure you are happy and safe. The porters were incredible as well. Hari was always helping us move our bags and bring us food to our tables. Another thing that I really enjoyed about the trek was that the porters actually carried a box of fruits the entire time and served us apples, oranges, and pomegranate every dinner. The guide and porters couldn’t have done a better job and when I come back to Nepal, I will for sure request the same people to come along for the journey.Thank you again to Sameer, Shaurab, Dawa, Hari. You made my trip an everlasting journey.

Everest Base Camp and Three High Passes Trek

My wife and I signed up for the ‘Three High Passes” trek to Everest Base Camp with Budget Trekking to start 8 October with some trepidation - whilst we are active, reasonably fit walkers both in the UK and the European Alps, we are both 60+ and had no experience of the 5,500m altitudes on this itinerary. However, Sameer Budget Trekking Consultant convinced us that the route would include plenty of opportunity for acclimatisation and that we would be fine.So we duly signed up with Sameer who very patiently dealt with our many queries. On the appointed day we arrived ourselves at Kathmandu airport where we were greeted by our charming, English speaking  guide Dawa. We could not have hoped for better; Dawa had grown up in the area, was a very experienced guide and had excellent knowledge of the route. The next day Budget trekking laid on a very well organised tour of the major sites in Kathmandu, with a brilliant and very informative guide. This was followed by a final kit check, then dinner at which we were very pleased to meet Shaurab, CEO of Budget Trekking.Next day, we took the short but interesting(!) flight to Lukla airstrip where we were joined by Babin, our porter, cousin of Dawa. Nothing was too much trouble for these two to make sure our entire trip went smoothly. From arranging accommodation to discussing options for the route and being a constant fund of information about the area and its people – all was done with a minimum of fuss and constant good humour. The trek itself was totally brilliant in every way. The Three Passes route takes you out to the East of the region as far as Chhukhung at 4700m with an ascent profile that meant we acclimatised well to that altitude without the need for any medication. From there – our first high pass over the Kongma La at 5500 and down into the Khumbu glacier. From then on we were truly in the Himalayas trekking above 4750m and up to 5,500 on the passes, Everest Base Camp and a couple of 5000 plus peaks. The challenging Cho La was a high spot - in every sense!. All the time we were surrounded by the majestic major mountains and the most exceptional and stunning views. After 12 days above 4700m, we summited our final high pass, Renjo La and then it was downhill back to Namche, then Lukla where we said goodbye to Babin– and our flight to Kathmandu. To our pleasant surprise, we didn’t find the altitude as difficult as we had feared. Yes, the last 2-300 metres up to 5,500 were hard - we were short of breath and moved slowly – but the route planning allowed plenty of time. We did all the ascents we wanted to – with much gentle and patient encouragement from Dawa. We were also pleased with our choice of route – the main route up the Khumbu Valley to EBC, although stunning in every way is quite busy. So we were pleased that our diversions East and West to the three high passes took us into some quieter areas – all incredibly beautiful. We had left a couple of days free in Kathmandu in case of flight delays at Lukla. As the weather was perfect, we didn’t need them, so Budget Trekking, CEO  Shaurab did a brilliant job of arranging at short notice a two-night visit and flights down to Chitwan Nature Reserve for a little relaxation and game spotting. Then it was a farewell dinner with Budget Trekking and flight back to the UK.We cannot speak highly enough of Budget Trekking and their staff. Everything worked like clockwork, nothing was too much trouble and the whole experience from start to finish was excellent.

Everest 3 High Passes Trek was just Awesome

Budget Trekking provided an experience that left me awestruck by the beauty that lies within the hallowed Himalayas of Nepal. From the moment we set foot on the first mountain trail, I knew we were trekking in style. The first few days were tough, but, what is a reward without the hard work? What is the warm mint tea without the cold, high pass? What is the staple Dal - Bhat with its unflinchingly outstanding curry, without the glorious 1000 meter climb? What are the welcoming Nepali smiles, the manicured bedspreads, the skillful cooking, the beautifully rare snickers and cokes, the taken for granted internet signal without the legendary one-on-one battle between you and nature at its most raw and powerful? While the trekking provided the physical challenge that creature comforts deny, Budget Trekking provided the pillow to lay my head on at the end of the day, the down blankets under which I kept warm. From the thin air on the Renjo La Pass to the damp heat of the Sagarmatha valleys, I look in the gorgeous landscapes without worry knowing that my every need was taken care of, that every hunger pang was abolished with sweet coconut cookies and salty dry noodles that every fork in the road was illuminated with a green light, that every plant was described, every peak named, every concern comforted, any questions answered! No matter how hard we pressed, we were faithfully followed by our porters with our heavy packs on their backs and faithfully directed by our encyclopedic guide. I would absolutely trek with Budget Trekking again, for the mountains come standard for everyone but the incredibly personal trekking experience was catered impeccably. It was with a heavy heart and aching legs that we parted with our new brothers, and it is with heated anticipation that I await my next visit to the truly unique destination of Nepal.

“Three Passes trek adventure - amazing experience!”

My boyfriend and I completed Three Passes trek in October'16. Everything was organized flawlessly right from the start. The hotel in Kathmandu was lovely and we really enjoyed welcome dinner in the traditional Nepalese restaurant we were taken to by the company manager, Shaurab. Also loved the day tour around Kathmandu Valley. On the trek, we were looked after our guide Dev and our porter, Ram Daai. Both couldn't do enough for us. Dev would always get us the best rooms available in a tea house and made sure we have everything we need, offering extra blankets etc. We would discuss our trekking plans daily and he was very flexible, offering advice on what's best and always accommodated our request (weather wasn't spoiling us in the first week). Very friendly, cheerful, polite and always had our best interest at heart. We had so much fun! We didn't have to worry about anything and could just enjoy amazing Himalayan scenery and Dev would tell us more about the culture and the mountains.I should also mention that even before we landed in Nepal, Shaurab would always respond to the multitude of questions I had via email and was extremely helpful. We are thinking of going back to Nepal to do some more challenging climbs and we will definitely be using Budget Trekking again. They're very reliable and I'm sure we will be in good hands. We're very grateful to Shaurab for making sure this was an unforgettable experience for us and we're looking forward to another adventure with Budget Trekking.

Everest 3 passes

Thank you Shaurab and Sameer for a great trip!Shaurab and Sameer are a great partnership, together with their very experienced Nepali support crew they were able to look after every need of the 10 trekkers that completed this Journey. They go the extra mile in many different ways: -A very good acclimatization programme, coffee, teas & extra snacks before & with meals, the gas heater to ensure cold mornings in tea houses were more comfortable, plus incredible support while trekking. This team are very well respected in the Everest region & rightfully so.I would recommend this company and tour to anyone wanting "something more" the standard Everest Base Camp tour offered by so many companies.

Awesome adventure! - June 2017

We just finished a 19-day trek to basecamp, Cho La pass, and Gokyo. It could not have been any more fun or gone any smoother. Sameer organized everything in less than a day, planning the trek, hooking us up with a great guide (Dev, who's awesome), and even helping me retrieve my credit card that had been eaten by a nearby ATM machine. He saved the day again when flights were cancelled from the weather, calling in favours to get us on the best flights for the next day. Word to the wise...Always be on the first flight in and out of Lukla. In short,Budget Trekking is the best trekking agency in Nepal. We will definitely be back!
