Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes is a less frequented trail in the Everest region. Furthermore, this is rated as one of the best treks in the Everest region. Travelers in the region often praise of its beauty and offerings. On the other hand, Everest base camp via Gokyo lakes and Chola Pass takes you on the roller coaster ride. The trail climbs up and down and offers views of beautiful mountain panorama and culture.

It very rare in the other regions to find lakes made out of glacier deposits and in plenty. This trek takes you to beautiful emerald green and turquoise lakes. The lakes reflect the most magnificent reflection of the highest mountains. To add up, it takes you to the highest walkable passes, which is as well a fantastic vantage points. The vantage point offers views of one of the world’s highest mountains. Cho La offers the view of Everest and unlike the view from Kala Patthar. From Chola pass you can see the Everest dominating the entire landscape. Finally, we as well see the Everest base camp and the Kala Patthar which is the zenith of the trek

Along with mountain panorama of Everest you can enjoy the rich sherpa culture. Furthermore, you can enjoy their cuisine, accommodate in their homes and their way of life. Besides that, you will as well have chance of witnessing rare birds and animal. We as well will spot plenty of stupas and some rare monasteries in the region, which carries a history in its back.

Arrival in Kathmandu

You could be already in Kathmandu or you may be arriving on this very day and whatever it is we welcome you to Nepal! Thank you for choosing the Everest base camp via Gokyo lake trek with Vajra Adventure. On this first day, we transfer you to your hotel/hostel. You will not do much except observing the ambiance around you and get acquainted with the country.

Accommodation

  • Hotel in Kathmandu ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • Welcome Dinners ( Nepali Food)

ALTERNATIVE ITINERARY DUE TO FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS:

The flights to Lukla and back are heavily dependent on weather conditions. As a result, flight being canceled for one day, a couple of days, or for several days is a known phenomenon for flight companies in Nepal. In case we face such circumstances with your holiday plans in the Everest, we will be following a contingency plan and the plan would be as follows:

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Day 2

In case your flight was canceled on the previous day, we will attempt to board our flight on the second. This will be our second attempt to make that flight. In case we make it to Lukla on this day. We will follow our original itinerary from Lukla for the next 14 days.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Day 3

This will be the third and last attempt made to board your flight to Lukla. In case if you are not able to board the flight on this day as well, we would do our best to find an alternative. The best-practiced alternative will be a helicopter to Lukla. The helicopter on a sharing basis will cost USD 500 per passenger. In case you take the Heli, you will be dropped in Lukla in around 45 minutes. In case we make it to Lukla on this day, we will still follow the original itinerary to Everest Base Camp and head back to catch our flight on the last day from Lukla.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Day 4

In case we had no luck on Day 3, we will no more wait for the flights or the weather to clear up and head towards Phaplu by road. Depending upon the package you select and the number of people in the Group, we will either take a private vehicle or a public jeep. The drive takes around 9 hours. This route to Everest Base camp was used by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first to scale Mt. Everest. It takes 4 days from here to join the main trail to the base camp. The trek joins the main trail in Monjo.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

It is advised to have some extra days towards the end of the trip for the same reason. Flights might get called off for the same reason and you may have to wait for a couple of days or more.

Trek Preparation and Shopping

This is an important day because today is the day when you will meet with your guide. The guide or one of our team members will brief you about the trek about more or less everything you need to know. After briefing, we would thoroughly go through the trekking gear that we have. Furthermore, if there is anything that is not according to the trekking standard we will do last minute shopping of the trekking gears. On the other hand, one of our backend office staff will get busy preparing the required permits and logistics.

Kathmandu – Lukla – Phakding (200m descend – 50m descend)

After taking an early morning flight to the most adventurous airports in the world of Lukla we walk just for warm-up. We trek for only 200 meters descent and 50 meters of ascent in around 2 and a half hours. If weather permits you will get a glimpse of mountains right from the airport. You will hear and see Dudh Koshi roaring down from different places. Overnight in Phakding.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Phakding – Namche bazaar (1000m ascent – 100m descend)

This is one of the most difficult sections of the trek.  Within around 6 - 7 hours we cover 1000 meters in ascent and 100 meters in descent. You will come across beautiful villages in between and small yet amazing waterfalls. On this very day, you will see the first glimpse of Mt. Thamserku. In between Phakding and Namche is Monjo, from where we enter in the Sagarmatha national park. Right before Monjo, you may enjoy a notable forest of pine, fir, and Rhododendron. Beyond Jorsale and from the confluence of Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi is the most difficult 2 hours of trek on this day. Overnight in Namche.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Rest Day - Namche Bazar

Despite a day off, we take side trips to Khumjung and on the way, we as well stop by at Syangboche. On this day we hike to Syangboche airport; one of the high altitude, non-commercial airstrip. We also take the opportunity to visit Khunde and Khumjung where we see the school built by Sir. Edmund Hillary and a monastery that claims to home yeti’s scalp. We get back to Namche and rest and enjoy the view. Overnight in Namche.

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Namche – Dole (590m ascent)

There are two options from here to reach our next destination and we choose the one via Kyanjuma. With the views of snow-dusted, soaring Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse we make sheer ascent through barren ridges. After the ascent, we reach Mong La also known as Mond Danda, where we sit for lunch. After reviving we now descend to the root of the hill and banks of Dudh Koshi river to Phortse Thanga.A place which is at the foot of the mountains, dark and damp. From Phortse our trek continues to Dole which takes around 2 hours. Overnight in Dole.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Dole - Machhermo (ascent – 650m)

We walk short but strenuous and sheer uphill through the forest of Rhododendron, a beautiful trail and playground of musk deer. Keep an eye for Golden eagle and dramatically soaring mountains of the Everest region. The trail is comparatively easy from Dole and the only vegetation we come across is tundra grass and dotted scrub Juniper. It is advised to hydrate as much as possible due to remarkable change in altitude over a short period of time. We limit our ascent within 3 hours to Machhermo and call it a day to avoid altitude sickness. Overnight in Machhermo.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Machhermo – Gokyo (ascent – 350m)

The villages we see from Machhermo onwards are all temporary villages and only inhabited at a certain time of the year. With the beautiful view of Kantega and Cho Oyu, we follow the Dudh Koshi river for almost an hour, until we reach the first lake which is at around of sheer uphill we come across the 1st lake at 4600m, and further down the trail 2nd lake called Taboche Tsho and finally the third lake by the village Gokyo, known as the Gokyo lake itself. We can further travel to the 5th and 6th lakes which is around 1 and ½ hour hike up-down. Overnight in Gokyo.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Gokyo Acclimatization to 5th lake (570m ascent – 570m descend) (5th lake)

Trekking to 5th lake and back takes around 4-6 hours at an easy pace. Since it is almost full day walk we will keep it on the activity day, which is today’s day. We get back on the same trail out and not go towards Gokyo Ri but stick to the same trail. In around one and a half hours, we arrive at the 4th lake and further in around 2 hours we arrive at the 5th lake. The views of the peak from the 5th lake are very rewarding. Cho Oyu is the most significant mountain seen from the Gokyo. After an all-day excursion to the 5th lake and back, we call it a night in Gokyo.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Gokyo to Gokyo Ri to Thangnak

After acclimatizing in Gokyo and enjoying the views of Cho Oyu and the 5th lake, we spend another day to visit Gokyo Ri (5346m). One of the most appreciated, nearby viewpoints. We can witness an unparalleled, picturesque view of Everest (8848m), Nuptse 7861 m, Makalu 8481 m, Cholatse (6440m), Taboche (6495 m), Ama Dablam 6856 m, Kantega 6685 m, Thamserku (6608 m). The view of Everest however is the best from the peak of Gokyo Ri. Once we reach Gokyo we stop for breakfast and head towards Thangnak. In this section of the trek, we mostly walk on Ngozumpa glacier and through steep moraines. Overnight in Thangnak.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Drak Nak (Thangnak) – Chola Pass – Dzongla (Ascent 700m – Descent 590m)

The day is one of the longest and toughest and we start very early to cover the entire ascent and descent on thin air. It takes approximately 8-9 hours to complete the trek. The drag however pays back with some pretty nice and near views of peaks Everest, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Phari Lapche, Kyajo – Ri. Further after crossing Chola Pass the trail again becomes sheer, exhilarating scramble, on the edge of the mountains. The trail is treacherous, marked with cairns, and often confusing and slippery. Once we head down we call it a day in Dzongla.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Dzongla – Gorakshep

The first 1 and half hours of descent takes us to Thukla and further an hour of walk takes us to Lobuche. Cholatse steals the show in the first half of trek, whereas you would get the first glimpse of Nuptse and Lhotse which is prominent as well as captivating. The walk from Lobuche to Gorakshep takes around 1 and a half to 2 hours for fit and fast whereas it could take 3 hours with normal pace and fatigue. From Lobuche, the track is easy, clear, and pleasant. Later, the trail twists, turns, climbs, and goes past Kangri Glacier to Gorak Shep. Overnight in Gorak Shep.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Gorakshep – Kalapatthar/Ebc – Gorakshep (Ascent 650m, descent 385m)

Initially, trek follows the narrow gap between glacier moraine and the mountain. We make a very small but difficult climb on moraine with the first sighting to Gorakshep. We cannot visit both Kalapathar and Everest base camp on the same day which is why we do it in 2 days time. It is recommended to visit Kala Patthar on this day. Many people prefer Kala Patthar in the morning but it is not recommended due to the ruined views from sunrise behind the Everest. Overnight in Gorak Shep.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Gorakshep – Pheriche (200m ascent, descent 700+m)

If we made it to Kala Patthar on the previous day, we hike to Everest base camp on this day before we descend to Pheriche. The trip to base camp takes around 3 hours one way. We start our trek early at around 6 am to our destination, which is a semi-permanent village made out of bright dome tents and bounder covered by prayer flags. After spending brief moments in Everest base camp we trek down for another hour to Gorakshep and further down to Periche in the Next 3-4 hours. Overnight in Pheriche.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Pheriche – Namche (Ascent 400+m and ascent 50+m)

From Periche we descend to scenic Imja River and make small and easy ascent and walk through the forest of Rhododendron and Fir. We walk majorly through the banks of Imja stream and Dudh Koshi until an uphill ascent to Tengboche and further down to Phunki Thanga and final shear uphill for around an hour to Namche. Overnight in Namche.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Namche – Lukla (Ascent 950m, descend 250m)

Although we start early and it is all descended from Namche to Lukla, it is claimed to be the hardest downhill in the entire Everest base camp route. The remorseless incline makes it difficult on the knees but there is always an option to slow down the pace and stroll easy. It’s a flat trail from Benkar to Phakding and further to Lukla and not too bad on the knees. Overnight in Lukla.

Accommodation

  • Local Teahouse ( 1 Night)

Meals Included

  • 3 times meals during the trek (staple meal of Daal Bhat for lunch and dinner or  any one item from the menu.)

Lukla – Kathmandu

We board an early morning flight on the world’s most adventurous before the weather is wrecked. With the views of the beautiful peaks on our right, we head towards Kathmandu.

A most excellent trip

A most excellent trip. From what I gather visually not as stunning as Annapurna but the sense of accomplishment when you reach EBC beats it all. Would definitely recommend Budget Trekking to anyone interested in doing Everest Base Camp via Gokyo.

Trekking to Base Camp in Nepal is a beautiful, breathtaking experience that I really enjoyed. Yes it's hard work walking up and down mountain edges but with spectacular scenery to look at it helps take your mind off the sore legs.

Best trekking company in Nepal

When I first got to Nepal I wasn't even sure I would go on a trek, but after meeting Ozul and everyone else in the trekking group I believe I found a great fit. Everything on the EBC trek was set up perfectly so I only had to think about the walking everyday. Overall it was an outstanding trek and definitely the high point of my time in Nepal

Incredible experience

Incredible experience, would recommend to anyone. Didn't find the walking too difficult, there is just lots of it! The pace is very good for all abilities. The trip is very well organised to ensure you acclimatize properly and it meant 15/16 of our group made it to basecamp without any sickness. The guides were fantastic, I could not recommend them enough - Dev, Dawa, Sudip and Prakash waited on us hand and foot and the trip would not have been the same without them.

by Kieran Wallace on Blank Business Name
The itinerary is great and allows time to adjust to the altitude.

I thought I did not need a guide as I'd been hiking before. After doing the trip I would 100% recommend it. Everything is so well organised and you can still go your pace as they have several guides. The itinerary is great and allows time to adjust to the altitude. The guides are super knowledgeable so you learn a lot and know which mountain is which and monitor your health.Tips:1. Do not pack too much!2. You probably won't shower, pack babywipes3. Bring cute hat (you'll wear it most of the time so it'll be in all your photos + hides your non washed hair)

by Amy Berryhill on Blank Business Name
We would definitely recommend this tour to everyone who love adventure !

Myself and my partner did the Everest Base Camp Trek and Gokyo Lake in May. The tour by budget trekking was great and our guide was brilliant as he was well organised and knew the area very well. This was quite an intense tour due to the length but the views were definitely worth it! The weather in May was good (clear and sunny with a few showers). We would definitely recommend this tour to everyone who love adventure !

It is truly the trip of a lifetime!

While this trip is both physically and mentally challenging, the rewards of reaching Everest Base Camp far outweigh the challenges faced getting there. The guides make you feel like royalty, despite the freezing temps, sleepless nights, and daily struggles of putting one foot in front of the other at such high altitudes. It is truly the trip of a lifetime!

The trip to Everest Base Camp was excellent

The trip to Everest Base Camp was excellent. The scenery was awesome. Dawa and his crew made us feel comfortable, always checked on how we were going, and kept us updated on what we were going to be doing. The guesthouses chosen were good and food better than I expected, but people need to forget the comforts of home, something that should always be done when travelling. A great experience. Well done Dawa, his crew and Budget Trekking.

This is truly an adventure of a lifetime!

This is truly an adventure of a lifetime! While trekking in this region has its challenges, it is absolutely worth it. A couple of tips if you are considering this trip: Don't underestimate the difficulty of the terrain. This trip will test you - train hard, trek slow! Go at your own pace and take in the surrounds. Also don't be afraid to ask to rest or take a break. Get a cheap pair of plastic slippers or crocs for bathroom use in the teahouses, so you can dispose of them at the end of your trip. However much toilet paper and baby wipes you think you will need... double it! Prepare a great medical kit before you go including cold and flu medication, blister packs, etc. You'll be surprised how much of this kit you will use. Happy trekking!

Everest base camp trek via Gokyo lakes

I traveled with my 10 friends for this beautiful trek and for the first time going to the heights of 19500 feet. I was very happy to get this company and Mr Dev as our guide, who made this trek a wonderful experience for all of us. They did everything as professionally and took personal care for everyone. Dev and his team were excellent and always ready to help with smiles. I am planning to send my son and his friends for this trek this year with them.Actually,, I met Mr Dev during my trek in Annapurna region in 2013, where he was leading another group but helped my group though we had hired other agent and had some problems. Dev work in Budget Trekking. Thank you so much Budget Trekking for this wonderful trekking.

best experiences of my life

Wow! Hard trek but so amazing and worth it. Our leader knew everything there was to know about the local culture, safety, and cared so much about each of us individually. Whether or not you're lucky enough to get Dawa as a leader, this trip is SO fantastic. Hard but life-changing. Train for it! Do cardio and be ready for a challenge. Go on Diamox if you can to make AMS less likely. But probably one of the best experiences of my life. AMAZING!! Good luck.

Outstanding

We would like to complement the effort of the Budget Trekking (BT) guide Rajesh Tamang (Raj) who was outstanding in ensuring we all reached our objective (Everest Base Camp). Both he and the team he led were friendly, efficient, and professional with good english langauge skills. During a trek of this type (140km reaching 5300m) we all faced individual challanges , but these were overcome with the help and invaluable leadership skills displayed by Rajesh Tamang (Raj). Thank you Budget Trekking and Rajesh Tamang (Raj) for everything.

Everest base camp is just awesome

I trained. I researched. I did treks at high altitude, but lower than Everest base camp. Nothing will prepare you for the effects on your body going over 4000m. Go into this with an open mind that you might have to accept you can not handle it.

Best tour to pick

Merci Budget Trekking.

An awesome trip and great hiking experience

An awesome trip and great hiking experience. Challenging at times but if you go slow and steady, chances are good that you'll get to Base Camp. Tip: it can get really dusty so bring a buff.

The EBC was challenging but very rewarding.

The EBC was challenging but very rewarding. I thought the hardest bit would be the trekking but I think anyone who is fairly fit will be able to manage it fine - but you should be prepared to cope with very cold conditions in the evenings (travelling in March) and quite basic accommodation. Scenery is great though and the sense of achievement when finished!

love it and get the experience of a lifetime.

What an adventure! You wont regret this one - and you'll never be more proud of yourself for giving it a go. Nepal is beautiful and as long as you read your trip notes and are aware of what the trip is like (basic shared bathroom facilities, up to 8-9 hours walking etc) you will love it and get the experience of a lifetime.

What an amazing trip!

What an amazing trip! So challenging but so well supported by the team Budget Trekking Pvt.Ltd. I was so impressed with Budget Trekking and would travel with them again. Getting to know the local guides and porters was so special. Hot tip: Toilets get tough in Gorak Shep.... bring some peppermint spray or similar to help ease the situation. Your group will love you for it..

Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes

Been planning this adventure for a few months, after emailed over dozens of trekking companies, I came across Budget Trekking Pvt.Ltd. Shaurab (owner) was very quick to response to all my inquiries and the price was very reasonable. Shaurab is also very accommodating, he was happy to follow my itineraries and weeks leading to the start of the trekking, I wanted to change the trekking dates, with no question asked, Shaurab rearranged everything for me. I was well looked after from the arrival to departure in Kathmandu.

Over-all, this has been a great trip.

Over-all, this has been a great trip. The leader and the guides are all very good and took care of all our needs. I also like how they managed some uncertain conditions like the flights to Lukla Airport - which by itself is very stressful since it always involves much waiting and too much uncertainty due to weather conditions. But they kept us updated and well informed and also let us know about alternatives in case we don't get our flights to /from Lukla. Healthwise, I noticed that almost everyone got some kind of cold and cough symptoms.
