When you land in Kathmandu, you’ll tend to see all kind of people in all kind of clothes. If you plan your visit only to cities of Nepal, then any kind of clothes suiting the weather would do you good. But, if you opt for the hikes and treks, on the sub-urbs and the villages, a proper dress code would serve you pretty good: Culturally and of course comfort wise.

If it’s winter you are visiting Nepal, a set of warm sweaters, warm trousers, wind cheaters, jackets, hats, mufflers and gloves would do great.  A sleeping bag and thick pair of shocks could never go wrong.

For women, if it’s summer, too tight clothes are discouraged. Shorts and short skirts are not found good ‘culturally’ but at least for when you hike, loose style knee length shorts are cool. Long pants are fine, but not leggings. Skirts are fine, at least knee length, and in temples longer ones would be better. Bare shoulders are considered inappropriate mostly in temples.

Men would be free from such restrictions but again, too tight ones are considered unsuitable, and shorts above knee are laughed at behind your back.

Considering cultural values, whatever you wear, you are accepted. It’s for you to decide on respecting the ethics and norms.
